GEN TAN SRI DATO’ SRI NIK ISMAIL BIN NIK MOHAMED (RETIRED)
Gen (R) Tan Sri Nik Ismail Nik Mohamed was the Chief of the Royal Malaysian Air Force from 04 April 2004 until he retired on 30 January 2007. Whilst in active service, he was on the Board of Directors of LTAT (Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera), Airod Sdn Bhd, ATSC (Aerospace Technology Systems Corp) and SME Ordance Sdn Bhd. Since his retirement, he has been appointed as Chairman of Zetro Services Sdn Bhd, Chery Alado Holdings Bhd and Beta Tegap Sdn Bhd.
He was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on 10 Oct 1969 after completing his military studies at the Royal Military College. After graduating from the Flying Training School (FTS) RMAF Base Alor Star in Nov 1970, he served at No. 6 and No.11 fighter squadrons flying the Tebuan and the Sabre F86 aircraft. On completion of Flying Instructors Course in Australia in Nov 1973, he returned to FTS where he served as instructor pilot on the Bulldog and Cessna 402B. From 1978 to 1982, he was assigned as a VIP pilot and Pilot Examiner on HS125 and F28 aircraft.
His early command experience included his appointment as squadron commander of No.12 Sqn (F5 fighters) and No.6 Sqn, and No.9 Sqn (both A4 Skyhawk aircraft) from 1984 to 1990, after which he was appointed as Commanding Officer of RMAF Base Labuan until 1992. From 1993-1996, he served as Head of RMAF Operation Centre, Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Defence College, and the Head of RMAF New Fighter Project that oversaw the procurement of the F18 and MiG29 fighter aircraft.
He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1996 as Assistant Chief of Air Force, Plan and Procurement, overseeing the planning and procurement of all RMAF capital equipment.
Subsequently, in Jan 1998 he was appointed as the Commander of RMAF Logistics Headquarters responsible for managing maintenance and support activities for all operational assets. On promotion to Major General in 1999, he was transferred to Armed Forces Headquarters as Assistant Chief of Staff, Operations and Training and later as Assistant Chief of Staff, Personnel Services. In Mar 2003, he was promoted to Deputy Chief of Air Force until Apr 2004 when he assumed his position as Chief of Air Force.
Gen (R) Tan Sri Nik Ismail attended various professional and academic courses in the country and overseas. They include Air Command and Staff Course and Academic Instructors Course in USA (1982-1983), Joint Services Staff College Australia (1993), and National Defence College India (1997) accredited with Masters in Security Studies from Allahabad University. He also attended Resource Management courses at Naval Post Graduate School (Monterey, California) and Naval War College (Rhode Island), USA, Fellowship programs at Cambridge University U.K., and Harvard University USA.
